The course begins with matter, energy, and measurement, then moves into atomic structure and the formation of molecules and ions. From there, students use chemical reactions and stoichiometry to solve quantitative problems, including reactions in aqueous solution and thermochemical energy changes. The course also develops an understanding of electronic structure and chemical bonding, leading to molecular geometry and bonding theories, and concludes with a study of gases.

Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (CHEM 431/631)

This course offers upper-level undergraduate and graduate students a broad introduction to the chemistry of the elements and the models used to explain inorganic compounds. Students begin with foundational ideas about atoms and molecules before moving to molecular symmetry and the experimental techniques commonly used in inorganic chemistry. The course then examines bonding in polyatomic molecules, surveys key principles of d-block metal chemistry, and explores coordination complexes and organometallic chemistry involving d-block elements as well as s– and p-block elements.

Non-scheduled courses

Senior Research in Chemistry I (CHEM 493)

In this course, senior chemistry majors complete an individual laboratory research project.
